ABSEILING DEATH
A MEREWETHER man has been found dead after an abseiling fall in the Blue Mountains. Friends saw the 49-year-old in trouble while he was scaling Boar's Head Rock, Katoomba, at 12.30pm on Saturday. He fell and his friends found him dead soon after, a police spokesman said. It is believed he suffered a heart attack. POWER PROBLEMS PARTS of Newcastle were without power for almost two hours yesterday because of a problem at an EnergyAustralia substation in Tyrrell Street. EnergyAustralia spokesman Allyn Hamonet there were interruptions to 5600 customers in Newcastle, parts of Hamilton, The Junction, Cooks Hill and Merewether.INJURED IN CRASH A MAN, 56, was taken to Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital yesterday in a serious condition after a motor vehicle accident at Merriwa on Saturday night. A Westpac rescue helicopter took the man, who suffered spinal injuries, to John Hunter Hospital before he was transferred to Sydney.SUSPECT PACKAGE A SUSPICIOUS package was left near petrol bowsers at a service station at Tumbi Umbi on the Central Coast. An unidentified man left the package at the BP on Mingara Drive about 11.20pm on Saturday. A police bomb squad found it was not dangerous.BOY CRITICAL A NINE-year-old boy remains in a critical condition in John Hunter Hospital after he was struck by a utility. Police have spoken with witnesses who saw the boy hit as he crossed Newcastle Road, Lambton, on Thursday. No charges have been laid. Anyone with information can contact Waratah police on 4926 6599.
